What is a monster?
A monster is a specific group of species separate from animals and Kylians. Due to excess exposure to it, Chrono mutated the bodies of animals and turned them into a whole new species within several hundred years. Their heightened abilities have given them a strange desire to fight, but they rarely do so to the death. For them, battling is usually a test of dominance and strength, and is the only way to get stronger. Fighting, like many animals, is also done amongst monsters for mating and territory rights. Battle is a common everyday thing for them. As Chrono will naturally heal monsters' bodies after a fight, there is little to no risk for their battles, save for loss of pride or dignity. Every time they win a fight, a monster's innate Chrono will power up. Monsters are intelligent and have their own language through which they speak to each other, but, with the exception of the kannar race's "Beast-Tongue" ability, it is currently impossible for a Kylian to learn how to speak this language. There are many monsters who can understand Kylian languages, and there have also been rare occurrences of monsters speaking a normal language.
While there have been attempts to create one, there is no official "monster guide". Kylians are encouraged to explore planets and determine what monsters live where on their own.
Every species of monster is affiliated with a particular element: fire, water, earth or air. Monsters can learn any spell or skill of their own element, as well as basic, non-elemental attacks that usually have to do with their biology (such as a horn-based attack for a monster that has a large horn). However, there are some monsters that can learn abilities from other elements -- they are very rare. There also are some monsters that do not have an element affiliation. They are referred to as "non-elemental", or "elementless" if the speaker wants to avoid confusion regarding the long-gone Nonelemental Tribe of ragos. These monsters can use attacks of any element, and are, for the most part, incredibly rare.
Monsters age by the month, regardless of species.
Child to Adolescent takes two months.
Adolescent to Adult takes one month.
A monster can only reproduce if it is an adult, and as a monster grows older, it grows innately more powerful. Thus, a child monster using a level one spell will definitely be weaker than an adult using the same spell.
The shape-shifter race has the ability to turn into monsters while in battle, but they can only turn into a monster they currently own and have on their Chrono Ring. The Chrono Ring uses Chrono to convert the shape-shifter's body into that of the selected monster, enabling the shape-shifter to use any of that monster's abilities and attacks.
