Name: Aveh Riphurn
Sex: Female
Age: 32
Race: Alove
Height: 3'07"
Weight: 42 lbs.
Date of Birth: November 11th, 4308
Dominant Foot: Left
Appearance:
As an alove, Aveh is not tall by any means, nor is she terribly heavy. Standing at just a little over three-and-a-half feet tall, including her ears, and weighing at forty-two pounds, she's about the size of a toddler of most other races. To non-aloves, Aveh might seem quite frail, but due to her military training and consistent regard to keeping up with her "normal" exercise schedule (which was lifted almost directly from her training), Aveh is actually rather muscular, especially for someone so small. Her legs are by far the strongest part of her body, as they are able to lift relatively heavy things (relative to her own weight), and, depending on the weight of the object being lifted, she's even able to fly while carrying something with her feet. With completely black fur and a white underside, Aveh's coloration is like that of a skunk, almost. She has a rather squared, well-pronounced muzzle and short whiskers, and her large, tall ears are somewhat conch shell-shaped. The fur around her cheekbones tends to get scruffy very easily, prompting Aveh to continuously trim it to avoid looking unkempt.
There is a tiny almost-triangular notch on the edge of Aveh's left ear, just in the middle of the pink "outer" part of it. Aside from this, she currently does not have any easily-visible mars or scars like it. The only other mark she has is a series of three scars on her the bottom of her neck; she wears a red bandanna (the de facto "symbol" of the unit she served with while in the army) around her neck to cover them. These scars of hers are almost parallel to each other, beginning from her right shoulder and going all the way across to her left at the base of her neck. Because Aveh would rather keep a low profile and not draw attention to herself, she keeps these scars hidden, since someone with wounds like that would likely garner more than a few stares when spotted. On the topic of not calling attention to herself, Aveh's hair is rather plain. White in color, it's spiked at the top and is tied in a somewhat short ponytail (it barely reaches her shoulders) below her ears, a far cry from the more extravagant styles that she's seen. However, the idea of giving herself a more outlandish hairstyle is unthinkable; Aveh doesn't want to call unnecessary attention to herself, and that's reflected in her appearance by choice.
Aveh has a habit of turning to look at people or things with her left eye; this is because her right eye used to be almost completely blind until several years ago, when she got laser eye surgery to correct this vision problem. Though both her eyes are perfectly fine now, this habit still persists whenever she goes to look at something. On the topic of her eyes, they're dark brown and have the uncanny ability to stare at something for long periods of time without blinking. Aveh usually doesn't even notice when she doesn't blink for long periods of time (within reason, of course) and is generally unaware that she can have a rather creepy, unnerving look to her because of this.
Aveh's usual attire consists of floppy pants (often dark blue) that go down to her ankles, a sleeveless shirt (often white), the aforementioned bandanna, gloves around her feet that don't cover her toes, and a utility belt of some sort that goes across her chest and mostly serves to keep her loose shirt from blowing around everywhere during flight. The belt is slung around her left shoulder and goes down diagonally across her torso from there, attached with a clip to a little hook on her pants. Both her shirts and pants, naturally, always have slits for her wings to extend out of and have buttons that let them easily be put on or taken off. Her "foot-gloves" are light brown and are simply large fingerless gloves made specifically for alove feet.
A few things Aveh always carries around are her ID, a pocket knife (useless in combat; the worst it could do is cut someone, as it doesn't have a sharp enough point to actually be stabbed with), a first aid kit, and a copy of Fullidau and Wereicks, a thick and rather out-of-date military manual from the year 4209 that Aveh follows almost religiously. Though its cover worn around the edges, its pages are in pristine condition and don't have even a single tear. When encountered with a difficult situation, she'll most likely refer to this book for advice on what to do. All of these items are small enough to fit in her utility belt's pockets (naturally, the first aid kit rests in the biggest pocket in the belt), and there they remain until they're needed for use.
Personality:
As a soldier, Aveh takes her duty to her home planet, Nicta, very seriously. What would be best for Nicta overrides everything else – at least, that's what she tells herself. Sometimes her actions don't always match up to this, but she always intends to perform her duties as a soldier before doing things for her own self-gain. In her mind, whatever she is ordered to do is "right" in some way, even if she can't see it; in fact, it is automatically the right thing to do because it is what's best for Nicta, the local peace, justice or something like that. Aveh may mentally question peculiar orders at first; however, outright disobeying is practically unthinkable. She puts Nicta's survival and benefit above her own, and, in the end, Aveh is unlikely to lose any sleep over anything "immoral" if she convinces herself that it will benefit the galaxy, Nicta, innocent people and the like. There may be exceptions to this in the future, but nothing of the sort has happened yet. It is when she acts for her own benefit (and when her dedication to other people/Nicta/justice/what have you is out of the situation entirely and has no bearing on what happens) that she questions the morality of what she did. For example, if Aveh was being attacked by someone else and killed him, she may wonder if killing him was really the best course of action. However, if this person was a sworn enemy of Nicta or otherwise a disruptor of the peace, Aveh would feel as though it was most definitely the right thing to do.
Aveh speaks respectfully and sometimes a little formally – she's sensitive about offending others, yet she often has trouble actually practicing empathy. It's hard for Aveh to imagine what somebody else feels like in a given situation (which may be for the best, given her life as a soldier), though she can act with sympathy, even though she usually doesn't feel anything of the sort most of the time and is only saying things like "I'm sorry" because it's what the other person wants to hear. Often, she simply responds reflexively in a manner that will keep tensions lowest and doesn't always speak what she thinks or believes. Aveh would really rather avoid unnecessary fights or fall-outs, especially causing them. Unnecessary fights are just that – unnecessary. They're pointless since there's nothing to be gained from them, so Aveh will stay out of them whenever possible. It'd be safe to assume that Aveh is a pacifist in theory when things like justice, her duty to Nicta and the like aren't involved at all. She doesn't like fighting, verbally or physically, and avoids it when she can. Spur of the moment violence can occur, and she won't think much of it until after the fact most of the time, but otherwise, (again, when Nicta isn't involved) Aveh is a pacifist and a neutral figure in arguments or debates. However, when she encounters violence, she’ll be aversive to it due to morality and not the sight. Aveh is surprisingly able to take the sight of blood, gore, and the such, but depending on the circumstances, she wouldn’t be okay with it going on.
Having grown up more or less antisocially, Aveh is a little awkward in social situations since she deliberately stayed away from things that, in her mind, wouldn't help her become a good soldier. These things generally included anything "fun" or "creative". Furthermore, she feels pressured to do her best and go above and beyond the call of duty all the time. After all, if she merely does the average amount of work, then people suffer as a result of her laziness or incompetence. Unfortunately, she constantly doubts herself, feeling as though she isn't strong enough or insert adjective here enough to accomplish a particular task. She worries about doing something wrong and subsequently punishing others for her mistake. But Aveh refuses to sink into mediocrity, and she will often volunteer for difficult tasks – why? Perhaps it's for "proof of existence"; by doing something extraordinarily well, she will always be remembered and never fade away into obscurity. Or it could be that she seeks praise to soothe her lonely soul, feeling alone in the world and wondering if there's anyone who actually cares about her. Still, it could be to prove to herself and others that she can do things on her own and isn't worthless, a notion she grapples with when left to her own thoughts.
It's a combination of all three. Aveh is paradoxical; she doubts herself constantly, which may lead one to conclude she has no ego, but she has such pride that she needs to be seen, she needs to prove herself, she needs to be praised and given attention. Yet Aveh doesn't act vainly outside of this; she thinks bitter thoughts when it comes to herself. There's thousands of things wrong with her, thousands of things that she's done wrong. Messing up here, screwing up there – Aveh rarely forgets things, especially if they were particularly humiliating or consequential. But even despite this, Aveh is usually inwardly optimistic about situations in the beginning and is virtually always determined to try her hardest (though she almost always presents herself as apathetic and emotionless, a generic "Yes, sir!" soldier who always does what she's told). It's when failure or tough times come crashing down on her that the vile self-loathing thoughts return, and they don't always go away easily. She can wallow in her misery for weeks on end, hating how she's moping for the entire time she's stuck in her rut. In especially bad times, the thoughts can turn to suicide – wouldn't Nicta be better off relying on someone dependable instead of waiting on her? However, she has never dumped these problems onto someone else, and keeps them bottled up inside of her. As a coping mechanism, Aveh will talk to herself about her problems or bad situations, since just the sound of hearing it out loud has proven to help her mental stability in the past, but if she notices someone else is around, she'll shut up instantly. She isn't too social to begin with, and when the conversation turns to her personal life, Aveh will change the topic, give vague or generic answers, or do something else to avoid talking about herself.
Oftentimes, Aveh acts cowardly. It may seem odd for a soldier so fiercely dedicated to her planet, of all things, to lack courage, but she does. Unless it's for someone else (most often Nicta, but sometimes it's for a certain individual), she is prone to quickly giving up on things and declaring it a hopeless situation. In fights, Aveh will flee if things start to go badly. And then she's troubled for days after about what might have been if she had stuck around – she could have won, but she ran away, the useless coward! As such, Aveh has to mentally talk herself out of fleeing or out of giving up on something, even if it's for someone other than herself. "I can do this, I can do this!" or "I can't run away, I can't run away..." are common thoughts when in the midst of a critical decision or action.
Aveh likes to help others, being a strong believer of true justice and aiding the innocent in danger, and she can be fiercely loyal to people she considers herself obligated to help – but, again, her thoughts don't always match up with her actions. It isn't too much of a stretch to imagine Aveh abandoning someone mid-battle due to sheer terror or not helping somebody out because she's too busy acting indecisively to actually take any action. She will feel overwhelmingly guilty about it later on (and she copes with guilt either by wallowing or by shutting it out of her mind entirely, neither of which are too healthy), but it is a very strong possibility that either of the two (or similar situations) could occur. Aveh is less inclined to help strangers than people she knows, sometimes even to the point of total inaction, but she does usually feel some sort of motivation to help out someone in trouble. Furthermore, it may be hard to actually form a true relationship with her, as her desire to serve Nicta overrides things like friendships.
Remember: Nicta, the law and justice come first. Always.
History:
Born in the city of Fol Atzo, Aveh grew up in a neighborhood primarily inhabited by noctras and cainoses. She and her step-father were one of the few aloves families there -- not that Aveh particularly minded or cared. Even as a child, she didn't care about fitting in or whether she had friends. In fact, she preferred to be alone. Some of the kinder children attempted to make contact with her by trying to play with her or attempting to invite her to birthday parties, but the young Aveh brushed them off and mostly ignored them. Aveh's step-father frequently urged his daughter to make friends, but she always preferred to watch TV or play on the computer instead of playing with other children. There was some kind of draw to the stories where the hero conquered the villain and justice always prevailed, possibly because Fol Atzo wasn't exactly a crime-free city and Aveh was familiar with some of the violence that went on (even if she didn't really understand all of it). She'd often pretend to be a superhero, soaring around in their small apartment and arresting imaginary villains. This behavior didn't go unnoticed by her step-father, who exasperatedly tried to use her superhero obsession to get her to connect with other kids. It didn't work in the slightest; the other children simply didn't interest Aveh at all, and by the time she was thirteen and still almost completely antisocial to people outside her family (and even then, she would often run off on her own to go into an imaginary world), her step-father had given up on getting her to make friends. One day, while doing some grocery shopping, Aveh and her step-father saw a cainos in military uniform standing behind them in line. Respectfully, Aveh's step-father stepped aside and let the cainos go in front of them. When Aveh looked on with noticeable confusion, her step-father took that moment to explain his reasoning in a way he hoped Aveh would understand.
"You see, Aveh? That's what a real hero looks like," he had said. His choice in words was deliberate, and it certainly clicked in Aveh's mind, but probably not in the way he intended.
After realizing that the military personnel were the real heroes of the galaxy, Aveh almost entirely forsake her fictional role models and instead started to read up on the military exploits of Nicta, choosing famous commanders and generals instead as her own personal heroes. The First Galactic War in particular interested her, as it was the only galactic war that Nicta had participated in. While her step-father couldn't complain about her finding a passion outside of something fictional, he started to grow worried when Aveh declared that she intended to join the army and preserve the peace of Nicta like that. He wasn't particularly nationalistic himself, so her sudden fierce devotion to the planet alarmed him and took him somewhat off-guard. Still, when Aveh showed that she was serious about joining the army, he decided to respect her decision and bought her vaguely military-related trinkets and objects, like fake guns and fake army medals. Over time, her determination to get into the army grew, and, finally, at age eighteen, Aveh was admitted into the army.
It would be a lie to say that she enjoyed every second of it. Life was difficult in the army. Some of the training procedures were unfamiliar and difficult; many of the soldiers made it clear that they were only in it for an "easy" way to get paid since they'd dropped out of school and hadn't been able to find a job anywhere else, so the atmosphere was a far cry from the "Nicta pride" vibe Aveh had been expecting and still had. She grew used to it, however, and she gained a job in patrolling Nicta's territory in space for pirates, looters and other such lawbreakers at age twenty-five following four years of spaceship piloting training. This was the job she had always longed for: actively participating in throwing lawbreakers behind bars and ridding the galaxy of scourges that would spit on the name of justice! Like all of the pilots in her unit, they wore a red bandanna somewhere on their body. It was apparently a tradition that a former commander had started, and Aveh didn't think to question it.
When she was thirty, she got into a skirmish with a band of pirates that were trying to harvest Chrono from a starfield just within Nicta's boundaries; it had been her first real fight, as the few rogues she'd encountered before then had surrendered the moment they'd been confronted. In the midst of the situation, Aveh had panicked, and one of the pirates, a rago, had managed to get inside her ship through the emergency escape hatch. The rago easily overpowered her due to the size difference between them; the fight ended with the rago ripping her claws across Aveh's throat. After that, Aveh blacked out, and awoke in a hospital bed. Another patrol ship had found her and taken her back to Nicta, but the pirates had been long gone by that time. Not only that, but they'd done some serious damage to the one-person spaceship she'd been piloting. Not only that, but they'd made off with virtually all the equipment Aveh had been carrying on her person and in the spaceship, including her military-issued Chrono Ring.
This failure struck a deep chord within Aveh -- how useless she'd been! How terribly she'd done! Why hadn't she been able to stop those pirates? After that incident with the pirates, Aveh's self-confidence took a huge blow, and she became even more determined to do well to make up for her past failure. However, though she resumed her post as normal, she never encountered any other pirates or any other lawbreakers, which subconsciously made it "impossible" for her to perfectly repent for her costly mistake.
Shortly before turning thirty-two, Aveh was temporarily discharged and sent on a vacation. Since she'd rejected all other offers of a vacation before then, her commanders had made this one "mandatory" in order to keep Aveh from getting too stressed from being an on-duty part of the army for so long. At a loss as to what to do, Aveh went back home to her step-father and generally did nothing but continually work out to keep her body in shape for when she went back to the army. Worried about his step-daughter's health, Aveh's step-father asked around about something to keep Aveh's mind engaged and off of the army so she could do something else with her life. The overwhelmingly unanimous suggestion from his friends and co-workers was to send her out into the galaxy on some sort of tour or "adventure". Seeing new places and getting Aveh off of Nicta would definitely help her cope with being discharged.
He bought her a ticket to Arplakoon, where she could visit some of the most powerful beings in the galaxy and get a new Chrono Ring for her journey. Knowing Aveh, she'd try to correct injustice everywhere she went, and he didn't want her to go in there unprepared, since all of her weapons had been reissued to other members of the army during her vacation. Although Aveh had protested against going, since she wanted to at least be on the same planet in case they needed her suddenly, her step-father was adamant about getting her on her feet and into the galaxy. By the time it came to get on the spaceship to Arplakoon, Aveh had more or less acquiesced to the idea of actually temporarily leaving Nicta, and so she set out to venture to the planet in the center of the galaxy to begin her "vacation".
